Between direct-to-streaming films and big box movies, 2024 is shaping up to be an incredible year for movies. With COVID and strike-delayed studios finally catching up on release schedules, there are going to be an incredible number of incredible films releasing this year. Whether you’re watching from home on a streaming service or heading to theaters to watch, movie-lovers should have some great options in just about every month of 2024, and that can lead to some difficult decisions on what to check out. That’s why we are here today to count down our top 10 most anticipated films of the year!
#10 – Madame Web
The fourth iteration of Sony’s Spiderman-Universe is here, with a new character and a pretty big twist! The film follows the story of Madame Web, a New York City paramedic who starts developing psychic abilities that allow her to see “into the Spider World” as well as a number of impressive physical abilities. It features an impressive cast of Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, and Celeste O’Connor, and is sure to have some surprise cameos. Madame Web seems like it provides an interesting variation on a relatively formulaic genre, so we are pretty excited to see its debut!
#9 – Lisa Frankenstein
If dark comedy is your jam, Lisa Frankenstein seems like the film you could only dream of. In 1989, a teenage girl accidentally reanimates a decaying corpse from the Victorian era. She takes this opportunity to quite literally mold him into the “man” of her dreams using the tanning machine in her garage. Once he’s completed his final transformation, the two embark on a murderous love-fueled murder spree. Truly romantic.
#8 – A Quiet Place: Day One
The beloved franchise is back, this time with a prequel story explaining what really happened in the first days of the when the aliens first arrived. Other than that, very little is known about the film’s particular plot – expect some casting decisions including Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and more! John Krasinski is returning to continue creating the story, as well as executive producing the film, so we’re confident it will be a great film that pushes the franchise to new heights.
#7 – The Fall Guy
After previously leaving the industry, Hollywood stuntman Colt Seavers has returned to set! Unfortunately, just as soon as he makes his return, the movie star that he’s covering for goes missing, but Colt offers his services to locate the missing actor. Starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, The Fall Guy is a film adaptation of the 1980’s tv series that was met with critical success, and we couldn’t be more excited to check it out!
#6 – Joker Folie á Deux
Everyone’s favorite killer clown is back in action, and Gotham has never been more…musical? The sequel to the villains origin story is being worked into a full fledged musical! While that sounds possible, Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn certainly have the talent to pull it off. With the absurdity that follows both characters, we’re confident this movie will be an off-the-rails romp featuring some of our favorite DC characters!
#5 – Deadpool 3
Superhero movies have been one of the most popular and formulaic genres in the past decade, but the Deadpool franchise completely flips all expectations on its head. Ryan Renolds stars as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, a crude mercenary with superhuman strength, regenerative ability, and an impressively foul mouth. The character constantly breaks the fourth wall, speaking directly to the audience, and makes decisions that a “normal” hero would never make. The first Deadpool film has audiences crying laughing, and Deadpool 3 is certainly going to do the same.
#4 – The Watchers
If supernatural horror is up your alley, then The Watchers may be your hit film of 2024! It features Dakota Fanning as an artist who gets lost in a cursed forest in Western Ireland. Things go south very quickly as she realizes she’s being stalked by mysterious creatures, alongside three complete strangers she meets along the way. The Watchers gives off some seriously creepy vibes in the trailer alone, so we cannot wait to see the full movie!
#3 – Arthur The King
Based on a true story, Arthur The King spins the tale of an adventure racing team who befriends a stray injured dog while in the middle of an endurance race in the Dominican Republic. The dog follows them through the entire 435-mile long trek, receiving some help and also lending a paw when he can! This film has a star-studded cast including Mark Wahlberg, Simu Liu, Juliet Rylance, and even Bear Grylls. It looks to be a truly impressive story about the survival and resilience of man and animal.
#2 – Dune: Part Two
The first Dune film was one of the biggest movies of the year in 2021, and its much anticipated sequel looks to answer many of the questions viewers were left with. After his family was murdered and pushed off the throne of Arrakis, Paul Atreides has united with the Fremen desert people in an attempt to destroy House Harkonnen, who betrayed his family. Dune is one of the most complex and interesting science-fiction stories ever told, and if the critical success of Part One is any indication, Dune: Part Two will be frequently appearing in many top films lists in 2024.
#1 – Gladiator 2
Ridley Scott’s Roman epic makes it return to the silver screen in 2024, and movie-goers couldn’t be more excited! The sequel will shed light on what happens following the events of the original film, after Maximus kills Commodus in gladiatorial combat. Commodus’ nephew Lucius, who had befriended Maximus, survived the whole ordeal and is now a grown man. Not much else is known about the story itself, but we do know about the incredibly talented stable of actors featured in Gladiator 2 including Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and more. Ridley Scott movies are always box office spectacles, and Gladiator 2 has us pumped to get 2024 started!
